It has been awhile since I have written a blog but I thought this would be a great start for 2021. I was able to interview a fellow cosplayer and friend Vicky!

I wanted to know what drew her into the world of cosplay and the impact it had on her life.

"What attracted me to the world of cosplay was the outfits. There’s a lot of artistic effort that goes into how you approach the recreation and against your own features and body. Also in the end even if your costume isn’t the best it’s the attitude, which is exactly what art brings out of the artist: emotion". Vicky continued to explain her connection with her cosplays and which one was her favorite.

"My favorite is my Dark Phoenix. I felt so empowered and emotional. I was going through a tough time with depression. I think having Jean Grey as a character in mind helped me convey that. I haven’t worn her since.

It was really great to hear her reasoning behind her specific cosplay and the impact it had on Vicky's personal life. She chose a character she connected with. I was curious what she did in her spare time when she wasn't cosplaying.

I have been hiking alot. I go to lots of state parks and hotspots for hiking. I really like to take in the expansive sights of trees and hills and colors.

As we were discussing the different parks and projects she had in mind I wanted to know what advice would she give to other cosplayers or anyone who wanted to jump into this world.

Anyone who wants to cosplay should cosplay. I personally pick characters on mix of two things-my belief in how I can accomplish the look and the emotional attachment I have to the character. I have been so lucky to hit both those things when I chose a cosplay. When I say “how I can accomplish a look” I want to reinforce the thought that this has nothing to do with how I look physically. I’m dark skinned and short. But I know with the right eyeliner I can make myself into anything. It’s all about how much effort and the vision you have.

It was fun asking her about her experience and views on cosplay. I learned alot about her connection to this world along with personal experiences that have made her stronger today. It is always a joy speaking with her about superheroes or what is going on with our lives. Great way to start this year.
